The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, children typically have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, allowing us to identify developing bite or jaw concerns while they are still growing.
Early evaluations don't always mean early treatment. In many cases, we simply monitor your child's growth and tooth development so we can recommend treatment at the ideal time. Identifying concerns early can help simplify future treatment, reduce the risk of more complex orthodontic problems, and support a healthy, confident smile.
What is Orthodontic Growth Monitoring?
As your child grows, Dr. Laurie and the team at Wheaton Orthodontic Center carefully monitor their smile to identify developing orthodontic concerns before they become more complex. Early evaluations allow us to guide jaw growth when appropriate, monitor tooth eruption, and recommend treatment at the ideal time—often making future orthodontic care simpler and more effective.
During your child's growth and development, we'll monitor:
- Bite development, including crossbites, open bites, and other bite concerns
- Jaw growth and facial development
- The eruption and positioning of baby and permanent teeth
- Crowding, spacing, and whether there is enough room for permanent teeth
- Teeth that may be at increased risk for injury because they protrude
- Oral habits, such as thumb sucking, that can affect bite development
- Breathing patterns, including mouth breathing, that may impact facial growth
- Oral hygiene and overall dental health
Most importantly, we'll ensure your child's smile is developing as it should and recommend treatment only when the timing is right.

My experience at the Wheaton Orthodontist was absolutely fantastic! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm smile and immediately felt welcomed.The inside was incredible—it felt more like a fun entertainment space than a typical orthodontist office. There were comfortable places to sit and relax while waiting, a snack bar with lots of enjoyable treats, and even a video game area! Everything was thoughtfully designed to make the experience fun and comfortable. The bathroom was also remarkably clean, which I really appreciated.By far, this is one of the best orthodontist offices I have ever visited. Dr. Laurie was absolutely amazing, and her entire team was cheerful, welcoming, professional, and truly outstanding. The customer service was exceptional from the front desk all the way to the back. I can’t say enough great things about this team and the experience they provide.
